Feature Friend Friday ✏️

Feature Friend Friday ✏️

Tacora, Taco for short, has been a dear friend of mine for many years. I met her at Elizabeth City State University, where she pledged Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Whenever I need a t-shirt for homecoming or my lovely logo, Taco never fails me. All I have to say is ”Taco I need...” and it’s done! She‘s quick, efficient, and affordable! I was able to ask her a few questions which you can read below!

✏️ When and what piqued your interest in art?
When I was younger I struggled with learning and reading, due to having a big imagination. Sometimes I couldn’t focus in school, and the only way I could was to doodled. By doodling it allowed me to comprehend what I was learning and translate what I was experiencing in the world around me. Drawing also helped me read better because I would draw out the words and what I was reading to help me understand better. I can honestly say, 4th grade is when I really got into drawing. This was when I would draw characters of Dragon Ball Z for a boy I liked, and it took off from there.
✏️ What personal habits hinder your creativity?
I tend to put my creativity on the back burner to make sure I take on “real” jobs to take care of my family. As an Art Teacher, I don’t often get to express myself creatively, due to having to follow a structured curriculum. At times this hinders my creativity. This also can happen when taking creative projects for my business.
✏️ What advice would you give someone who wants to get involve in art but unsure of which direction to take?
Just do it! It doesn’t matter which path you take creatively. As long as you’re doing what you love in creating art, then you’re going on the right path.
✏️ With the running joke of “starving artist”, How can someone remain positive and look forward to the fruits of their labor?
As an freelance artist, you have to remember: (1) art is not for everyone and (2) not everyone respects art. As soon as you understand those two things, you’ll be better off. Don’t waste your time on trying to convince others about your art. Understand your worth and charge what you‘re worth.
